Shelter
Branch Basket
18” x 22” x15”
2011
This piece is inspired by the Luttrell family and their amazing story. Branches were collected from both of their houses to represent their past and future stories.
Carlsbad Caverns
Watercolor
4” x6”
Carlsbad Caverns is a surreal source of inspiration for me. In these painting it tried to abstractly capture the darkness, depth, and beauty seen at the Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
Yoga Nidra
Watercolor
18” x 36”
Yoga Nidra is a restorative form of yoga where there is great concentration on breathing. This diptych displays breathe as a golden light, traveling from your chest to your stomach. The golden light represents the connection between the mind and body.
Grandpa Jack Shrine
November 2011
Installation Piece
My Grandpa Jack, the patriarch of my mothers family, died in 2005. Who he was, and how that influenced our family, was apparent as soon as he passed. We all miss him terribly and have such fond memories of his strength, sternness, and sense of humor.
I installed an alter in the Dia de los Muertos style. Using a candle as a planter, I layered soil on top of the wax, representing his burial. I buried a 5-piece package of gum, a green toy solider, and a comb. My grandma says that, “He stuck to her like chicle.” The gum is used to represent his relationship with my grandma and their 5 children. The toy solider is meant to represent his time in the army and his ties to El Paso and Ft. Bliss, TX. The comb represents his family in Pennsylvania and his father’s barbershop. Planted on top is a live sculpture depicting the century plant that grew in front of my grandparents house. The three blooms that stem from the spike are meant to represent the three generations that have stemmed from my grandfather. They are connected to the comb with red thread, representing the bloodline. Surrounding the candle are trinkets that represent personal memories with my grandpa and another candle with a St. Christopher label representing the medallion he kept in his wallet throughout his life. I used live succulents to create this sculpture in order to show that from life and beauty, must come death. Yet what remains are influential memories of those you loved.
